Losing weight is a difficult thing to do. Getting motivated is even harder, especially when prime time television is so good and all of your videogames are so much fun. That’s why many people have turned toward losing weight with their videogame consoles. Much like the Dance Dance Revolution weight-loss fads before it, Wii weight loss is what’s on many gamers’ minds during this season of resolutions.

You can’t start working out with your Wii Fit until you have everything you need—the console, game disc, and Balance Board included. You’ll be most successful if you schedule a block of approximately 30 minutes of exercise at least three days a week. It’s helpful to work out at the same time each day you choose to exercise because Wii Fit can give you more accurate weight and BMI measurements. You won’t look slimmer or tighter right away, but it will happen!

Finally, the part no one wants to hear (or read): exercising is only one part of the weight-loss equation. It’s important to eat right and pay attention to your caloric and nutritional intake, and also get plenty of sleep.

What Does Wii Stand For?

Wrestling Is Invigorating. Weirdos Inside Innovation. We Is Ill. Which Is It?

What could Nintendo’s hit game console, the Wii, possibly stand for? As it turns out, nothing; “Wii” is meant to be a word, not an acronym (but I’m sure we all had some good guesses). So if Wii is supposed to be a word, what in the world is it supposed to mean?

Nintendo chose to scrap the original name of the console—which was “Revolution,” and has an obvious meaning and connotation—and opted for an abstract, vague little word that, until now, meant nothing. When Nintendo bigwigs first announced that the much-anticipated Revolution would instead be called the Wii, brows were furrowed, heads were cocked like curious puppies’, and some folks were even outraged. There were even complaints about how “wee” is what children call urine or a silly synonym for small.

When asked about the name in an interview, Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo’s VP of Corporate Affairs, explained it all. First you have to consider how it’s pronounced. Just like the plural of you and I, the console is pronounced, “we.” This is important to keep in mind because while the games are suitable for one player, Nintendo encourages more than one to play at a time. The Wii was developed as a party game, after all!

Next to keep in mind about the console’s name is the logo. The two lowercase I’s are meant to represent two controllers and two people (the dots are their heads). This emphasizes the camaraderie (and competition) that the Wii hopefully brings to its players.

Finally, Kaplan made it a point to give her audience a little marketing lesson. While “Revolution” was fitting for the console and its revolutionary features, it wasn’t the kind of name that grabbed the attention of the consumer. Referring to names like Google (only mathematicians knew what that meant before they hit it big), Amazon, and Virgin Atlantic, she pointed out that these are unique, interesting names of things we know and love. If you think about brands that resonate with you, you’ll probably notice that a lot of them are a little odd, or at least not as clichéd as something like “Revolution” (I mean, that’s the name of a soccer team!). Reebok, Nike, Pepsi, Tivo…Something that’s important to realize is that “Wii” sounds different from all of the other game consoles out there. One witty writer on a Wired.com thread wrote, “…you find that normal people can’t/don’t/won’t keep the names of the systems straight. People ask for “PlayStation 360s” and “PlayCubes” and “Mario on Xbox”—to them the system names are confusing and completely interchangeable.”

It all makes sense to me. Then again, I always thought they called it the Wii because when you play it, you go, “wheeee!!!!”

Not everyone’s a guitar hero. Some of us are drum heroes, or bass heroes. Some of us just want a microphone in front of our faces to feel like superstars. It’s because of the fact that it takes a variety of musicians—and not just guitarists—to make a chart-topping band that the game Rock Band was created to battle the ever-popular Guitar Hero on nearly every videogame console out there. And that includes America’s sweetheart, the Nintendo Wii.

Included in the hefty Rock Band box is a wireless guitar, a drum kit, and a microphone. For those wanting a full band, the game supports a second guitar so that the bass parts may be played, but it is sold separately. Just like previous incarnations of the game for other consoles, the instruments are extremely responsive and can all be played at the same time (this requires some technical maneuvering, but it is totally possible). A difference in the instruments for the Wii is that the drum kit is white instead of black (staying true to the Wii branding), and the pads are softer and bouncier, which is great for the more up-tempo tunes.

Individuals can practice their rock chops on their own by playing any one of the three (or four) instruments, but the game really is best with your friends making up a full band. You get to name your band, pick your songs, and swap instruments between songs for a dash of showmanship. Unfortunately, Rock Band for Wii does not give players the opportunity to earn new fans, money, or equipment from touring or customize the appearance of your band members. Sorry, you’ll just have to look and act your favorite music genre in real life.

With more than in previous releases, Rock Band has 63 songs from which to choose. Most of the songs are the actual recordings by the bands that made them famous, but there are few dead-ringing covers. Some of the tunes you’ll have the chance to jam on are by classics like the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, The Police, and The Ramones, as well as some modern rock bands like Weezer, Radiohead, and Oasis. While the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game have the option to download additional tracks, the Wii version does not. Because of this, Harmonix Music Systems has made “Track Packs” available for purchase to Wii and PlayStation 2 Rock Band players. Each Track Pack is sold just like a game and features a variety of songs that are downloadable to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players.

Despite the fact that Rock Band for Wii has some downfalls, it’s still the obvious buy to guarantee a good time at a party. And you won’t have to hire a band, either!

A lot of people have a lot to say about Nintendo’s lovable Mario Kart game specifically made for the Wii. Find the lowdown, the skinny, the 411, all right here. I present, The Comprehensive Review of Marion Kart for Wii.

First of all, what’s the deal with driving games being so darn fun? I remember being so, so far away from the day I’d even get my Learner’s Permit—it makes sense to play a videogame that lets you pretend you’re not only licensed, but good enough to race cars when you’re that young. But, years and thousands upon thousands of real miles driven later, I have to confess that Mario Kart is still one of the most enjoyable video games out there.

Like all other incarnations of the game, Mario Kart Wii has a plethora of crazy, whimsical racetracks that make you feel like a kid again, dreaming about what it would be like to take a road trip with your buddies in that galaxy. And, true to its reputation, the game is full of the possibility of dirty tricks. And not fear-for-humanity dirty tricks like the ones in Grand Theft Auto (use the services of a lady of the night and then run her over so that you can keep your money?!), but dirty tricks like the ones only a gang of plumbers, a dinosaur, a mushroom, a gorilla, a princess, and a whole lot more kooky characters can pull off (typically involving bananas, turtle shells, and…uh, magic).

This version of the classic game is different due to the addition of stunts and bikes—as in motorcycles—as well as the ability to have 12 racers at once (up from eight), and play online against, well, anyone.

So let’s start with the stunts. The marriage of the track and the Wii controller make stunts possible in this game, with half-pipes and ramps (think skateboards), pits, and moguls (as in bumps or mounds, not of the P-Diddy or Kimora Lee Simmons variety). The inclusion of these obstacles is to encourage you to attempt some stunts. To perform a stunt, such a 360-degree, airborne spin, a player simply flicks the Wii remote exactly when their character leaves the ground (for a ramp-assisted jump). This flick of the wrist can be either rewarding or backfire tremendously, as a successful land will be rewarded with a healthy-sized speed boost and/or tricks to use later like mushrooms and stars, while an unsuccessful stunt will get you thrown off the track into lava or somewhere else just as undesirable.

Mario Kart Wii’s main event is the Grand Prix mode. Your options in this mode include engine size and difficulty settings (both of which you have three choices), and the race is comprised of four courses, but there are an additional four that you can unlock by finishing the first set, giving you a total of 32 different courses, ranging in difficulty.

The crazy, challenging tracks may not be for everyone, which is why (along with other reasons like nostalgia, I presume) Mario Kart Wii includes the classic courses we’ve all mastered as well. The most common complaint about this is that the old school courses just aren’t any fun now that the new ones are so challenging and crazy. I say, everyone needs a warm-up, right?

Christmas is over, and the gifts have been given and received. Perhaps you got everything you wanted, including the much-coveted Nintendo Wii console you had been asking for. Or maybe you were already a Wii-head and got a bunch of gift cards to your favorite electronics or videogame store. Either way, it’s time to do your research and pick the very best Wii virtual console games on the market to spend your plastic present on.

According to GameStop.com’s rating system, the following games are the best (rating 6.0 to 9.5 on a scale of 10), from highest score: Super Smash Bros. Brawl; Super Mario Galaxy; Okami; World of Goo; No More Heroes; The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess; Mario Kart; Call of Duty: World at War; Guitar Hero World Tour; Rock Band and Rock Band 2; Wii Sports; Animal Crossing: City Folk; Wii Fit; and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

So what does it all mean? Let’s focus on the Editors’ Choices. The games with the highest score (a 9.5) are Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. It warms my heart to know that gamers’ favorite plumber is till topping the charts with his and his posse’s hijinks. A great thing about Super Smash Bros. Brawl is that it includes not only the ability to play online with multiple players, but to do so with ease, as there is very little lag involved. Conversely, there is a single-player adventure mode with a length that is nothing to roll your eyes at. Also at a player’s fingertips is a feature that allows them to share replays, screenshots, and custom levels with their not-so-savvy friends. Unfortunately, these custom levels can’t be used during online games against cyber-opponents.

Super Mario Galaxy is heavy on aesthetics, so for those you playing in your windowless basements, this is the game for you. The graphics and level designs are colorful beauties, and there are tons of levels and stars to play and find, respectively. Possibly the best pro on Super Mario Galaxy’s list is the controls: they’re nearly flawless and extremely tight. The only complaints that seem to surface about the game are: a couple of Mario’s suits being difficult to maneuver, and the storyline not quite making as much sense as it could. I guess a game can’t be perfect, but this one sure sounds close; not to mention super (get it, super?) enjoyable for both beginners and seasoned gamers.

Okami, No More Heroes, and World of Goo also received top honors of Editors’ Choice this year, all with a score of 9.0. Like Super Mario Galaxy, Okami is a beautiful game that is art in itself. No More Heroes continues the gory story of Travis Touchdown and his mission to the top of the assassin’s league. World of Goo is the oddball on the list, as it’s a puzzle game where the player uses goo droplets to build structures.

Whether you decide to spend your holiday money on a plumber, an assassin, or a bunch of goo, it’s clear that getting a game for your Wii will be money well spent.

Wii Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

We’ve all played Guitar Hero. Some of us obsess over it, playing the same song over, and over, and over again until you at least make it through (sometimes not so gracefully) to unlock more songs. Some Guitar Hero players are actual musicians, using the game to unwind from the frustration of playing a real guitar, while others have never placed their hands on one. But in the world of this video game, everyone’s a rock star.

It was only a matter of time before one of the most successful video games and one of the most successful game consoles on the market eloped to become the happy couple that is Guitar Hero for Wii. It’s only natural that the Wii, a console that prides itself in more active ways of playing video games, and Guitar Hero, a game best played standing up, would join forces to become one of the most coveted games for the bored, the party animals, the wannabes, and everybody in between.

So what’s so special about Guitar Hero for the Wii? Well, first of all, after two incarnations of the game, this third one, Legends of Rock, is the first to be available to the Wii console. Secondly, the point of the game isn’t just to master the tunes—it’s to beat specific rock legends like Slash of Guns and Roses—er, Velvet Revolver and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave (but really, you and I both know Rage Against the Machine is a better fit for this rockin’ game). In addition to battling the rock star avatar (rock avastars?), a player can also rock out online against other Guitar Hero players the world over.

This game inclides some quite impressive improvements of earlier carnations of the game’s features: the dual-color fret buttons are more responsive, for increased accuracy; the strumbar is longer for a more pleasing jam session; and the Wii remote speaker plugs into the guitar and also produces sound effects! The controller, specifically, is something special too. Available in a Gibson Les Paul as well as a Kramer Striker shapes, the controller adds a certain level authenticity to the game (less toddler toy guitar, more private collection to the stars guitar). Besides the shape, there are also changeable faceplates in the American flag, British flag, and a tortoiseshell-looking one for the normally-white base. Finally, the neck (the long part of the guitar) detaches for easy storage. Whew!

Now for what you’ve been waiting for: the songs and the game itself. Guitar Hero III features over 70 of the most fun, classic and new, rock songs ever, from Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.” and “Talk Dirty to Me” (the Poison cover) to Weezer’s “My Name is Jonas” and The Killers’ “When You Were Young.” As always, players may play either with or against each other (arcade style and dual shredding, respectively), or, as mentioned before, online. And in this game, the venues, lights, and character moves are sicker and more twisted than ever.

So choose your weapon and your opponent wisely, and get heroic.

To Wii or not to Wii. Actually, the question is, “To Wii or to Xbox 360.” It’s a predicament many, many consumers have faced, are facing, or will eventually face when their current game console finally kicks the proverbial bucket. In this article, both will be stripped down and examined for what they really are. Controllers will go head to head. Online capability will battle it out. Graphics will get it on (get your mind out of the gutter). Pros will be weighed against cons. Let’s get ready to rumble.

First, let’s talk audience. I’ve heard many a “serious gamer” talk all kinds of smack about the Nintendo Wii, saying it’s for girls, sissies, and any other offensive term for less than manly people. That’s all fine and dandy, but have you heard the masses—meaning unserious gamers—talk about Xbox as a game console for the new generation? Not so much. The thing is, the Xbox is confusing and intimidating to a lot of so-called ordinary people, while the Wii is an adorable, inviting console to gamers of all levels and interests.
Speaking of confusion, let’s take a look at the controllers. Xbox controllers are massive and look a little something like a switchboard, and this is completely necessary for Xbox games, as they permit a player to do tricks, switch guns, change to night vision, or what have you, depending on the game. The Wii remote doesn’t have all of that stuff. In fact, the remote depends on the very movement of the gamer him/herself to play the game. You know how when there’s a sharp turn in a racing game and we all lean into whichever way we’re turning, as if it’s going to help? With the Wii, it actually does. I’m pretty sure that’s the exact game-playing behavior that got the Wii invented in the first place.
Now the graphics. Okay, okay, Xbox game graphics are pretty fantastic. And since many are High Definition-compatible, it’s tough to compete. Unfortunately for the Wii, HD actually magnifies any shortcomings in the graphics, instead of amplifying the good stuff. It looks fine on standard definition television sets though, so people without HD can happily play without a worry. It’s also important to note that oftentimes, the graphics depend on the game and not just the console. In Wii territory, the graphics are purposefully mediocre, the way cartoons South Park or Dr. Katz aren’t visually impressive but still extremely charming.

And finally: price. The bottom line is that the Xbox 360 is far more expensive than the Wii. With a price tag of $250.00 for the necessary hardware to play a game (minus the game, of course), the Wii is much less expensive than the Xbox which ranges from $300.00 to over $500.00, depending on what style and even color you’d prefer.
Are there reasons to splurge on the Xbox 360? Sure. But if you’re just looking for a good time in a game console, the Wii’s the way to go.

Sometimes, I love being wrong. Thinking that Dance Dance Revolution might be the only video game to really get its players moving, Wii Fit was brought into the world to get couch potatoes to give a little exercise a shot. And it worked.

Of course anything that boasts the non-embarrassing, at-home workout is going to motivate a few more people than Bally Total Fitness commercials where everyone is gorgeous and wearing very little clothing, but there’s just something about Wii Fit that has even more appeal than yoga videos and Tae Bo. It’s the options.

A Wii Fit player can choose from a wide variety of activities—more than even some of the best gyms offer in their class calendars. There’s yoga, strength training, aerobics like jogging, boxing and even hula hooping, and balance games that include ski jumping, tight-rope walking, and even one called Lotus Focus, where the challenge is to stay completely still while looking at a flame (all the Wii Fit reviews agree—it’s harder than you think). Even if your goal isn’t to be more active or to get in shape, it’s clear that your chances of boredom are pretty slim with a Wii Fit.

Perhaps the most useful part of the videogame is the activity log, which allows a player to log activities they took part in throughout the day in the real world (read: not while playing Wii Fit). The game then calculates how each activity in the game will affect the player. For example, if a player inputs that they regularly run three miles a day, a low-impact aerobic workout won’t be as difficult as it would to someone who rarely exercises. This is extremely helpful for those that don’t want to push their bodies further than they can go, or those that get bored when things aren’t challenging enough.

But the game doesn’t leave all that touch it with smiles. The fact that some activities require one never to move his or her feet can cause some knee pain. Another common complaint is the fact that the Balance Board has a maximum weight for players: 300 pounds. This is unfortunate because the game would otherwise provide the exact baby steps that some motivated overweight people need to get into shape.

Wii Fit is a great game for active and inactive people alike that may or may not be extremely bored and weigh less than 300 pounds; sounds like a large demographic to me. Oh, and if it’s fame you’re looking for: make a Wii Fit YouTube workout video and be your own Billy Blanks.

Where To Find A Wii

If you are new to the wii scene, you may have exhausted every avenue to find a Nintendo Wii. Nintendo vowing to increase their production for Wii’s hasn’t helped the product’s scarcity. Even online sites that track for Wii availability usually has “unavailable” for most of the Wii’s. Only the bundles or package deals are available, including games and accessories that you probably don’t want.

Is there hope for the Wii Shopper?

Here are some pointers to get started with Wii hunt, even for the holidays.

1. Look for the local shops

The nearest neighborhood shop may be the best place to start. If you have a family member or friend in the store, you might be able to get inside information. Wouldn’t it be great if they can tell you when the next shipment will be? It’s no problem if you don’t have friends or family working there. You can call the stores directly and simply ask if there are Nintendo Wii consoles available. In most cases, the clerks will be happy to tell if the consoles are in stock.
What if the store doesn’t have any in stock? Simply ask them when the next supply run will be. Even if they refuse to tell, ask another stock clerk the same question. Chances are that if you keep pestering them, you’ll get a response from a store associate. Not every employee is the same. Some may even feel good if they disclose a closely guarded secret.

2. Notification Systems
If you’re limited with time, there are other ways to find the Wii system. One notably is a notification system. The notification system alerts you when a Nintendo Wii is available without you doing anything. We’re not talking about sites that show a listing of stores and their Wii availability. Since most of these sites only show “bundled” packages, we want to avoid them.
However, companies like Toys R Us are taking the lead to provide instant messages to your cell phone or email to tell you where consoles are available. There are free services online that offer the same service. Itrackr.com is one of them. The website provides instant notification on where Wii’s are in stock. It’s useful if you want to take the passive route.

3. Nintendo – Corporate HQ

Ever thought going right to the source might be useful? Most people don’t, but have you ever thought of what Nintendo thought of its own image on the supply matter? Think about all the poor kids who won’t get a Nintendo Wii for Christmas this year. You’d be surprised. A dearth of Wii’s is not good PR for the Nintendo’s public image. In some cases, it behooves the company to respond to consumer concerns. You can browse Nintendo’s website (Nintendo.com) and look for the contact link. There’s a contact list. Look for an email or phone number of the customer relations department. If you’re able to email or talk to someone, it wouldn’t hurt to mention your dissatisfaction with the impossibility of finding a Wii. Yeah, this might not always work but it doesn’t hurt to try. If Nintendo does respond, they might offer you a Wii at retail price.

4. Ebay – Looking for Values Online
If all else fails, or you need a Nintendo Wii soon, you’d probably want to check out ebay or this site. Stores are already having a hard time stocking for holidays. Why not try a tested and true source such as ebay.
Instead of typing and searching for great deals from the ebay, you can access Wii consoles directly on ebay by clicking on the “consoles” tab at the top. WiiHaven.com is an authorized Ebay affiliate. There are even “Buy It Now” options if you’re looking to expedite your purchase.
